Mr Kevin Borrett BscEcon FCII MBA Chartered Insurer Kevin Borrett trained as an economist at the University of Wales before joining the Sun Alliance Insurance Group. He spent the first ten years of his career in a variety of UK commercial insurances underwriting positions for the company based in the London market and South East England. He also holds an MBA from the Sir John Cass Business School, London
From 1994 to 1996, he was seconded to the Department of Trade & Industry in Whitehall as an Insurance industry consultant providing support to senior civil servants and Government ministers including Michael Hesseltine. Whilst at DTI, he co-authored an influential report on the strategic challenges facing the insurance industry highlighting the disadvantages faced by the then fragmented UK non-life companies when compared with other European competitors. He established the joint DTI & Association of British Insurers, benchmarking initiative and was Chairman of the British Quality Foundation Insurance Group until 1998.
His return from the DTI coincided with the merger of the Sun Alliance and Royal Insurances. He was responsibility for competition related issues and helped shape the development of RSA’s world-wide strategy for commercial business.
In March 2000 he was recruited as one of the founding team for the newly formed Mitsui Marine International as Class Underwriter, Financial Solutions leading their structured credit insurance underwriting team.
In 2004 he was tasked with establishing the new London subsidiary Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (London) Ltd and has had operational responsibility for that business since that date, being appointed to the Board in January 2007. He is a member of the executive management of the UK Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance business in the UK which has grown from a start up operation with 14 staff in 2000 to a turnover of £400m and 200 staff in 8 years.
Kevin has been a representative member of the Chartered Insurance Institute Professional Standards Board since its formation in 2003. This followed his election as Deputy Chairman of the, Society of Fellows for the period 2000 to 2002. Previously he was Honorary Editor of the Society of Fellows Journal from 1997 to 2000. Kevin has also chaired the CII Morgan Owen Award Panel since 1998 and been an expert witness inl Insurance litigation cases.
Drawing upon his network of City of London contacts built up over 25 years, he provides business angel investment and in some cases advisory support. He is an investor and non executive Chairman of Cellexus Ltd, a Cambridgeshire based biotech firm.
Optional He is married with four teenage children and lives in West Sussex. He has been a ward chairman for North Horsham Parish council and his local community involvement at present is centred around his position as secretary for a local Baptist church. When time allows his main leisure interests are Golf and wine appreciation.
